Pembroke vs Tarxien       22/10/08

Our second match this season was against bottom placed and newcomers Tarxien Rainbows. The game was played in heavy rain from start to finish which could have caused problems for both teams. However this didn’t hinder the reds much as right from the kick off it showed straight away that it was going to be a one sided game. Within 5 minutes of kick off, Janice opened the score for the reds with a well placed shot in the bottom left corner of the goal.  There were other several chances for the reds but the Tarxien defence managed to hold strong. The blues showed more confidence on the pitch compared to their first game vs. Mgarr. However the reds showed their fighting spirit and continued to create problems for the Tarxien keeper. In 25th minute, one of Tarxien’s defenders was forced to give a back pass to her keeper and mistakenly grabbed the ball with her hands which resulted in an indirect freekick from inside the penalty box for us. The free kick was taken by LeeAnne Wood who made it 2-0 for the reds. Just 5 minutes before the half time, Lillian Cremona created an attack near the corner post and finished the move with a curling shot from outside the keeper’s zone to increase our tally to 3 goals. An enthralling first half came to an end with a score of 3-0.

Just 1 minute after the 2nd half kicked off a cross from Lilian found its way into Tarxien’s penatly area, and unfortunately for the blues but lucky for us, they didn’t manage to clear the ball and Janice was quick to react and with a soft touch managed to score the 4th goal for the reds and her 2nd goal in the match. In the 56th minute LeeAnne dribbled two players and lobbed the ball to make it 5-0. The 6th goal of the game came in the 62nd minute from a brilliant shot/lob from near the half way line by Dorianne Bonello. Through shear determination our players kept pushing forward to try to score more goals. The last two goals came in the last 10 minutes of the game courtisy of Kaylee Mifsud and Shana Debono. With one swift move Kaylee intercepted the ball from in front of the keeper and nudged it in to make the score 7-0, and with a few minutes left on the clock, Shana shot low from the penalty box and with a slight deflection from one of the Tarxien players the ball slipped through the goal keepers legs to produce the final goal of the game.
