Pembroke vs Lija Iklin    25/03/09

In Division 2, Pembroke came from behind twice to beat Lija/Iklin 4-2.

Lija/Iklin took the lead after just two minutes, thanks to a well-placed shot by Dorcas Debono which beat Pembroke goalkeeper Ruth Debono. Ten minutes later, Pembroke levelled matters after a good run by Naomi Borg who found herself face to face with the Lija goalkeeper, placing the ball at the back of the net.

On the 26th minutes, Lija/Iklin regained the lead when Sylvana Scicluna managed to beat the Pembroke goalkeeper with a cute lob taking advantage of the latter's hesitation in leaving goal & give a Lija/Iklin lead 2-1.

In the 33rd Minute a good counter attack was leaded by the Pembroke duo Brenda Cutajar/ Lilian Cremona, Brenda did a solo run from midfield and when approaching the penalty area tried a one/two move with Lilian but Lilian`s assist resulted inaccurate so the ball was lost by Pembroke attacking duo, so the chance to level things again faded away with the wind.

However four minutes from half-time, this being the 41st minute Pembroke were awarded a direct free kick just outside the penalty area in which LeeAnne Wood made it 2-2 with a perfect shot over the defensive wall.

The first half was not over yet as on 44 minutes, Pembroke forged ahead thanks to Naomi Borg who took advantage of an indecision by Lija's goalkeeper and scored to make it 3-2.

After two minutes into the second half in the 47th minute Lija/Iklin goalkeeper left her goal position and tried and adventurous run out to try and stop Pembroke`s striker LeeAnne Wood from increasing the score and she managed to succeed but conceding a foul i.e another direct free kick in Pembroke`s favor, direct freekick was taken but ended few inches away from the bar.

In the 51st minute Lija/Iklin showed some classy football by leading a good counter attack, the ball was lost just outside Pembroke`s penalty area for the advantage of another counter attack this time having the Pembroke mark as LeeAnne Wood took the ball and tried a solo counter attack which ended up losing the ball when approaching lija/iklin defensive department.

Another counter attack in the 60th and once again having Pembroke`s mark, Brenda Cutajar Tried another solo run from half pitch but was bravely closed down by Lija`s defenders just before trying to shoot the ball.

In the 65th minute Substitutions were made by Pembroke`s coach Mr. Charles Borg, Dorita Agius being replaced by Kaylee Mifsud.

Four minutes later Lija tried to level the score by leading a very good attack, unluckily for them the final shot hit the left goal post to keep the score 3-2 Pembroke.

In the last four minutes of the match we had another 2 substitutions done Pembroke, Natalia Galdes replacing LeeAnne Wood  and Emma Fenech Soler replacing Lilian Cremona.

Pembroke sealed the issue on the 90th when Brenda Cutajar finished off a solo effort with a well-placed shot on the right side of the Lija goalkeeper
