On Tuesday 27th October 2009, both Pembroke Ahtleta and Lija Iklin Fc started their MFA Women 2nd division league season 2009/10 against each other in a match played at the Luxol grounds, with kick off at 8:30pm.

The match started with a thrill as after just one and a half minute Pembroke Athleta were given a very good opportunity to take the lead, when Match Official Mr Emanuel Calleja Order a direct Free Kick just outside Lija`s penalty area, LeeAnne Wood took charge of the mentioned free kick but her shot finished off few inches far from the left post defended by Lija`s Goalkeeper Karen Camilleri.

Approaching the fifth minute, Pembroke had another tremendous opportunity to take the lead, when after some confusing action inside Lija`s penalty area ended up in giving a clear opportunity to Pembroke`s Striker Leeanne Wood whom after very good control of the ball could only see her shot cleared off the line, with some disappointment on her teammates, coaches and supporters.

Just a minute later, in the sixth minute another superior action Leaded by Pembroke`s duo Amber Grech/Ingrid Vassallo. Youngster Amber Grech showed up her best quality which is agility, took the ball around for half pitch tried a through pass towards her colleague and playmaker Ingrid Vassallo but Lija`s goalkeeper was on the alert and did well to come out of her penalty area to reach and clear off the ball before Pembroke`s playmaker could take possession.

Going into the eight minute Pembroke`s pressing has been awarded, when Striker LeAnne Wood took possession of the ball, started a good counter attack in collaboration with Amber Grech and Ingrid Vassallo, with the ball ending up to youngster Amber Grech who calmly finished off after a fifteen yard run, to take Pembroke into the Lead 1-0.

Ten minutes into the match and Lija has been given a clear opportunity to Level the score, when a late tackle by Pembroke defenders leaded to a Lija freekick given by the referee just outside Pembroke`s penalty area, but fortunately enough the ball finished in Goalkeeper`s (Ruth Debono) hands .

Just a minute later Ingrid Vassallo displayed some good skills, after stealing a good ball, led a solitary run, dribbled a Lija`s defender tried her luck with a good lob but the shot went just over the bar to maintain the score 1-0 Pembroke.

This was a clear indication that Pembroke were about to double the lead, in fact this happened approaching the eighteenth minute, when an accurate through pass from youngster Amber Grech found Playmaker Ingrid Vassallo totally unmarked, who after dribbling Lija`s goalkeeper finished off in an empty net, to make the score 2-0 Pembroke.

Just a few minutes after Lija Kicked off the game again, Pembroke made it 3-0. Skipper Dorianne Bonello gave verification of her high quality in shooting, as after collecting a loose ball, tried a shot from distance which resulted in a picture, top corner goal!!

Twenty three minutes into the game and Pembroke increased their lead yet again. Another good counter attack and good run by Youngster Amber Grech and another well placed shot ending in the back of the net, for the fourth Pembroke goal of the night. An Incredible Three goals in three minutes.

Pembroke`s Goalkeeper Ruth Debono has been seriously tested in the thirty first minute, when Lija have been awarded another free kick, which was well saved by Pembroke`s goalkeeper.

The first substitution has took place in the thirty third minute and this was done by Pembroke`s Coach Charles Borg. Alexia Baldacchino being replaced by Dorita Agius.

Thirty sixth minute and Pembroke`s Goalkeeper Ruth Debono was brought into action to show some quality skills even outside the penalty area, when a lack of communication between Pembroke`s defenders leaded to an opportunity to Lija`s Attackers, Pembroke`s fullback Graziella Scicluna Stellini recovered her back position covered the ball well and intelligently won time and a throw in.

Just a minute prior to the half time whistle, Pembroke had just enough time for another attack. After some excelent bit of teamwork by Pembroke’s Lilian Cremona/Amber Grech and good finishing work by Dorita Aguis,  they increased the score to  5-0.

 Half Time:

Two minutes into the second half and Pembroke had another chance to increase the score with a good move started off by Pembroke`s Justine Zammit, and ending with  Lilian Cremona`s shot, which finished just wide of the right post.

In the fifty first minute another substitution done by Pembroke, this time Graziella Scicluna Stellini being replaced by Connie Scicluna.

Fifty Eight minutes into the game and Pembroke try to strike again this time with striker LeeAnne Wood who`s shot was saved and pushed out wide of the right hand side of Lija`s Goal by Keeper Karen Camilleri

In the sixty second minute youngster Amber Grech was given a good opportunity to increase both her personal and team scoring match record, when team mate Janelle Galea gave a through pass to the Amber who did well to control the ball and finish off with a shot, but once again finished inches wide to the left of Lija`s keeper.

Between the sixty sixth and the eighty seventh minute we had five substitutions, three for Lija Iklin, Charlene Tabone being replaced by Esther Schembri, Sylvana Scicluna replaced by Sharon Zahra and Rodienne Vassallo replaced by Denise Camilleri, for Pembroke LeeAnne Wood replaced by Leona Tabone and Lilian Cremona replaced by Stephanie Zammit.

In the Dying minute exactly into the eighty seventh minute Ingrid Vassallo, gave the last thrill of the day when after a good 20 yard solo run she placed the ball  where Lija`s Goalkeeper couldn`t reach. With the Ball in the back of the net, and with final whistle by the referee being played, Pembroke Athleta celebrated the start of the new season with a score of 6-0.
